Event Details

The specific services provided by psychologists, and the contexts in which they are offered, vary widely. Regardless of type of service (e.g., assessment, therapy, supervision, or consultation), the psychologist's theoretical or applied orientation, or whether the service relates to private practice, institutional work, or any other context, there are important considerations when establishing the necessary conditions for ethical practice.

This virtual workshop will review some of these foundational considerations and assist participants in considering how best to ensure they are creating and maintaining the right frame for their clinical services, including what to consider when thinking about informed consent, and attending to one's limits to competency and the limits inherent in one's professional role. Setting the foundational frame within which clinical services are offered is vitally important for clients and is essential to meeting a psychologist's professional practice standards.

Learning Objectives:

Workshop attendees will have the tools to:

  • ensure their informed consent process is appropriately rigorous
  • critically consider their competency limits and be aware of the common ways someone might be pulled offside
  • be attentive to the ways in which dual roles can arise in one's practice
  • increase their awareness of the responsibilities of being a supervisor and carefully consider whether to offer supervision services
  • make decisions that reflect an awareness of the requirements for offering cross-jurisdictional services
